Smarna Gora

In the Atlas of Slovenia, two peaks are marked on a lonely hill in the middle of the Ljubljana Basin, Grmada and Šmarna gora. The eastern peak is called Šmarna gora (669 m), sometimes called Gora by the locals, which rises above the plain by about 350 m. Originally, this peak was called Holm, which means a hill isolated from all sides. Later, Gora was also considered a divine path, which is where its current name comes from.

The western peak, Grmada of Šmarna-Gorska or Grmada for short (676 m), is 7 m higher than its eastern neighbor. The name caught on during the Turkish invasions. Because of its location, they had an observation post on it, and bonfires were used to signal near and far the approaching danger of Turkish raids.

Gault&Millau’s Point Of View for Gostilna Ledinek

There is nothing better than enjoying the delicacies offered by Gostilna Ledinek after a short effort at the top of Šmarna gora. You can be modest and drink their homemade linden tea and enhance it with some crispy pretzel, but if your stomach is rumbling, there are always dishes on the menu. Some classics, such as ričet, jota, Carniolan sausage, štruklji or apple strudel, are available every day, and during the weekend they also serve beef soup, roasted potatoes, pork roast and roast mice. When it is in season, they cook excellent mushroom soup, stuffed peppers or prepare dandelion with potatoes and cracklings. Those who are better informed come for breakfast – fried eggs with cracklings, which are spread with bread until the last bit. The view is even better that way.
