Smarna Gora ROCK CLIMBING

In addition to a large number of easy trails, Šmarna gora also boasts a real climbing route and a real rock wall, which has been a challenge for alpinists and sport climbers for a century.

Free parking is possible at the parking area at the bridge over Sava. A Ljubljana public transport bus No. 8 will take you to the starting point. Parking at Zavrh village is second solution.

Pogačnik’s climbing path

The path, called Pogačnik’s climbing path, begins in Vikrče, just below the Vikrški skalovjem. It first leads along the gap between the rock scale called Turenc and the Grmada massif, then climbs along exposed ledges to the most demanding part. Here it continues straight up over a vertical wall – the place is exposed and technically quite demanding – your only support is pegs and steel cables, and under your feet is a 10-meter abyss. The second variant of the path branches off to the right under the “ladder” and continues along a partially exposed ridge; this variant is less exposed, but still requires some knowledge and courage. Once you overcome the demanding technical part, the problems are over, but the steepness is not yet – your knees are sore all the way to the connection to the ridge-top Wester trail.

The climbing route is perfectly suitable as a test route for more serious ascents in the high mountains – anyone who can handle it will probably be able to do technical routes without much difficulty, such as the climb from Kredarica to Triglav or something similar. However, this is by no means a route that would be suitable for everyone; despite the fact that you are “only on Šmarna gora”, the route has all the characteristics of a real “ferata” – crossing a vertical wall with solid rock with nice holds and emptiness underfoot and a form of iron – wedges of all kinds and a vertical ladder!

Rock Climbing Ljubljana – TURENC

Those who find the protected Pogačnik Trail not enough can find a challenge in the walls around the rock scale called “Turenc”. Climbing this section requires mountaineering skills and appropriate equipment and thus falls within the scope of mountaineering activities. Anyone interested in such activities can find information in mountaineering associations and mountaineering sections.
