Driving in Trieste
The first thing you will notice is that the people of Trieste drive very slowly and that they mostly do not respect traffic signs. It is best, or mandatory, to adapt to their driving style.
The streets in Trieste are mostly very narrow and many are one-way streets. If you want to get to a specific destination, use Google maps, otherwise you will get lost.
You will notice that Italians stop their car right in the middle of the road, jump into a shop, have a coffee or an aperitif. Don’t get upset about it. Although, if you make a mistake on the road, you will see the face of a nervous Italian driver in the rear-view mirror who will shout something and wave his hands. This is completely normal.
Watch out for pedestrians. They will not stop at the zebra crossing to check if the road is clear. So be careful.
Watch out for motorcyclists. They drive in front of you, behind you, they will overtake you left and right. So be careful when moving left or right.
Short term Parking
Parking in Trieste is not impossible but it is not so easy. We suggest using the paid parking space at Eataly. This is a franchise store where you can buy first-class Italian specialties. And if you shop there, they discount your parking fee.

Long term Parking
It is best to find a free parking space in one of the narrow one-way streets near the apartment where you are staying. This search may take you about 20 minutes, as almost all parking spaces are occupied. When you park your car, save your location on Google-maps so you can find your car when you need it. If you successfully park your car, leave it there for the duration of your stay. Use the bus lines to travel around the city. Schedule and list of all lines attached.
However you can use nearby parking garages. Costs of parking garages are about 15€ – 25€/day. Info: www.parclick.com/parking-trieste
