ORTO BAR HISTORY

In 1981, high school students and rockers Marko and Andrej dreamed of having their own rock club, where musicians would gather and play and stay like-minded. The club would offer them independence and allow them to remain who they are and not bend to the winds. That’s why they named it Orto (not deviating from the set path).
The virtual club became a reality in December 1994, when they finally opened it after two years of work. Andrej discovered the old Zmaj factory, where Rock Club – ORTO BAR in Ljubljana is located, in a newspaper advertisement. Then, together with architecture student Primož Jeza, they designed the interior and brought their vision to life. For creating this vision, Jeza received the Plečnik Student Award in 1998.
The opening of Rock Club – ORTO BAR in Ljubljana, with its unique, authentic design and musical program, caused a real euphoria among visitors to bars in Ljubljana and Slovenia. In the foggy sleepy Ljubljana, after several years of dormancy, the punk-rock-alter spirit woke up, and with the opening of Orto, it finally found its “home”. The word bar was added to the word Orto itself so that people would know that it was a public space. Half a year after the opening, the first band – Leteči potepuhi – performed, and then 150-200 performances by different bands followed every year. Among them, in addition to famous local names, there were also many foreign ones. Then in 1999, the lower part of the place, called the bar, got a younger brother on the upper floor, called the club. This gave the concert and other programs in Rock Club – ORTO BAR in Ljubljana an additional boost. In this second period, architect Špela Kokalj has been helping them with the design to this day. Although the space has expanded, it has retained its club atmosphere and excellent sound comparable to music studios. There are very few local punk-rock, pop, and metal musicians who have not performed here since the opening of the venue, as more than 5,000 performances by local and foreign bands have taken place in Orto since 1994. In addition to concert events. Rock Club – ORTO BAR in Ljubljana is also known for its rich DJ program, which is performed both in the lower rooms and in the club.
Another acquisition of Orto’s complete offer is the year 2007, when smokers got their own space (smoking room) and another entertainment area with billiards and handball was opened on the lower floor.
