What they say about themselves in the Lepa vida – Thalasso Spa
On the Slovenian coast, we can admire one of the most beautiful natural and cultural jewels of Slovenia – the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. Here, the tradition of salt production has existed in harmony with man and nature for hundreds of years ever since the middle ages and has created and preserved a unique saline landscape. At THE LEPA VIDA THALASSO SPA guests are offered a special experience of traditional thalassotherapy in a unique natural environment amidst the salt pans using natural products, produced in the Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park. Salt-pan mud and brine are the most important factors of thalassotherapy, which uses the beneficial effects of the sea products, the sea shore and the climate for boosting the immune system and improving overall health.
Thalassotherapy
The sea is a real treasure chest of natural substances. In our Lepa Vida Thalasso Spa in the lee of the salt fields, we offer you the gifts of the sea which have a refreshing impact on the body, establish balance in the body, give it energy as well as nourish and regenerate the skin. You can choose from different treatments with natural products from the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. Salt-pan mud and brine – “mother” water, salt, and sea water are the most important parts of the thalassotherapy at the salt pans. Of them, salt-pan mud and brine are recognized by the Ministry of Health as being natural healing substances.
Thalassotherapy is an important form of healing, which uses the gifts from the sea and the beneficial effects of the marine climate to improve the overall well-being. The word originates from the Greek word thalassa, meaning “sea”. In thalassotherapy, sea products are used for health and therapeutic purposes, and it is mostly used as a part of relaxation and cosmetic treatments.

Natural healing factors
Salt-pan mud – black gold
In the field of healthcare, salt-pan mud, also called fango or black gold, is used mainly for two reasons. The first is its thermal effect – due to its physical properties, it has a large heat capacity, and therefore cools down very slowly. Here, the thickness of mud wrap plays an essential role – when only a thin layer is applied, the heat potential of the peloid will soon disappear and thermal activity will stop. Therefore, thinner mud wraps are primarily used for relaxation and cosmetic purposes. Under the thicker fango wrap, accelerated local circulation is triggered, oxygenation of the tissues improves and degradation products are washed away more rapidly; when acting on the pain receptors, it also provides an analgesic effect. Moreover, heat has a sedative or calming effect, which is the result of the reduction in pain, general comfort and well-being when the surface of the body is warm. Another important effect of fango is its chemical effect. Substances which are important for the activity of wraps are iron sulphate and sulphuric acid, which contribute to an increased circulation of the skin, and alkaline sulphides, which promote the exfoliation of the horny layers of the skin. However, the most important are humic acids which have an anti-rheumatic effect, and positive effect on women’s diseases and disorders through their influence on the hypophysis.
Otherwise, wraps also have a mechanical effect since the weight of the mud acts as a compression, but this effect on healing is not of primary importance.
For effective use, the mud must be heated to a specific temperature, i.e. 42-45°C. It should be applied directly to the skin with a layer of 3 to 5cm as a partial or complete body wrap. It should be left on the skin for 20 to 30 minutes, followed by rest for at least 30 minutes.
The main indications for use of salt-pan mud are: chronic pain of the locomotor system, arthrosis of the large and small joints of the hands and feet, conditions after injuries and operations, certain rheumatic diseases in the phase of rest, skin diseases (especially psoriasis with its complications, chronic skin diseases with keratotic changes), chronic non-malignant gynaecological diseases, where other treatments were not successful.
Before using the salt-pan mud for medical purposes, a medical examination is required on the condition of the cardiovascular system, skin changes and the psychophysical condition.
Brine – mother water
Brine is a by-product in the production of salt with a high concentration of mineral substances, containing calcium, potassium, iron, bromide, sulphides, etc. in addition to sodium chloride. It can be up to ten times denser than sea water. It was registered as a natural healing factor, which operates on the basis of a chemical effect, whereby the mechanical effects are also important since water builds up pressure on the body from all directions and acts similar to lymph drainage therapy. Buoyancy is also essential in baths, which facilitates the movement of affected and damaged limbs. The temperature at which brine is effective and has therapeutic effects is around 38°C.
We can use different brine densities: baths with a concentration of 10-15% for chronic pain, degenerative and rheumatic diseases of the locomotor system, conditions after injuries of the locomotor system and for relaxation purposes, whereas baths with a concentration of 20% are intended for the treatment of skin diseases, such as psoriasis with delayed complications.
Therapy in the form of group baths in the Lepa Vida Thalasso Spa is offered in four swimming pools, where the recommended time is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes. After using the brine pool, a rest of least 30 minutes is recommended.
Before using the brine for medical purposes, a medical examination is required on the condition of the cardiovascular system, skin changes and psychophysical condition.
Sea water
Sea water was first used by man as a natural factor for the preservation and restoration of health. It contains many minerals which are essential for life – the most well known being the iodine. Furthermore, it eases every move, allowing a greater number of repetitions, and thus strengthens the muscles of the entire body; in combination with the sun, it promotes the regeneration of the skin.
Sea salt
Primarily, sea salt is used for alimentary purposes. Piran salt has a specific taste, which is not explicitly salty as with other types of salts, however, it is extremely rich and full. It is intended for people who appreciate tradition and prefer natural nutrition. It is suitable for all types of natural nutrition and goes especially well with dishes where processing does not destroy their original taste, but gives them a touch of the area from where it originates.
Otherwise, sea salt can also be used for cosmetic purposes as bath salts and salt scrubs.
Marine climate
The marine climate has the most beneficial effects on people who otherwise live on the mainland – in a different climate. Holidays and treatments at sea are particularly recommended for stressed people, people with chronic lung diseases, inhabitants of large cities, smokers and people with skin diseases. The Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park is characterized by the special saline microclimate, where the best aerosol is present with the spread elements of the sea, increased amount of oxygen and no allergens. This makes the entire area of the salt pans unique with special importance being attributed to the Lepa Vida Thalasso Spa amidst the salt fields, where all activities take place outdoors.
